Kenneth Stuart Powrie recently held his solo exhibition entitled “Fleet Of Fools” at Fire Station Creative in December 2018.
“This is a very spontaneous and sub-conscious process for me – things I see every day, people and painters that inspire, places and experiences I have had, been and seen in the past”
Ken on his technique:
"At the moment I am very much into a thick impasto, treatment using pure, luminous colour applied with brush, knives, fingers to create an elemental groove almost rhythmical quality to the surface"
Starting off drawing as a young boy Ken’s initial experimentation with art has its origin in his beloved grandmother’s passion for televised professional wrestling:
“In order to give full focus to the carnage taking place in front of her, she would buy me a large Woollies drawing pad, one jumbo rubber and some pencils. I would cheerfully sit drawing as arms and legs flew across the TV screen.”
Ken studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. Since graduating Ken has spent six years living and working in the United Arab Emirates, both exhibiting in Dubai and teaching at the International School of Choueifat, Sharjah, UAE, an experience of which Ken used a source of inspiration for later work. Since returning to the UK he has exhibited widely in Edinburgh and London, also accepting private commission work and submitting work for different Collective Shows.
He continues to live and work in Edinburgh.
