Inspired: 'Ceramika Czekolada'
Ceramika Czekolada was the second collaboration between Robert and ceramicist Simon Ward. Simon throws the pots and attaches individually handmade porcelain birds, the whole piece is then handed over to Robert to be covered in various foils. Their first effort which used blue Tunnocks and Ferrero Rocher wrappers was shortlisted for the prestigious John Ruskin prize and the European Prize for Applied Arts in Belgium. Their second vase is covered with various coloured wrappers from the Krakow Confectionary producer Wawel, applied to pick out the detail of the birds. The wrappers were obtained from Polish delicatessens in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy and Robert painstakingly ate the 100 or so chocolates it took to complete the work. The title ‘Ceramika Czekolada’ references a type of chocolate coloured pottery popular in Poland.
’I love Simon’s work and I find the collaborative process great fun, I made a huge tiger with my brother David for the Royal Academy Summer Show last year and I have a few future link-ups in mind, artists whose work I really admire, though asking them to let me foil it also seems just a little bit cheeky.'
